THE CAB DISABILITY BENEFITS HOME VISIT TEAM
Working with the vulnerable for 13 years

‘I felt extremely intimidated by the DLA form. By having my advisor to fill out the form, it allowed me to answer the very challenging and personal questions honestly and with less distress.’ Client

For the last 13 years Uttlesford CAB has been running a specialised service for people living with disabilities who need advice or help managing their finances. For some just getting access to advice can be very difficult and there are many people in Uttlesford who do not claim the benefits to which they may be entitled. Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and the new Personal Independent Payment (PIP) are crucial in covering the extra costs involved in living with a disability.

The Disability Benefits team offers continuity of care, confidentiality and time to talk. A one-to-one home visit from an experienced and understanding adviser can help with the stress of living with long-term conditions and take away some of the anxiety arising from changes to the benefit system. Help can be arranged for those who need support making applications or filling in complex forms. Financial issues or care needs c an also be looked at such as purchasing aids and appliances, getting a blue badge, or lowering fuel bills.

The team is headed by disability benefits specialist, Lyndie Taylor, who said, ‘The implementation of PIP has so far been beset by problems, the end-to-end claiming process is taking longer than expected and there is a backlog of medical assessments, but we can help and provide reassurance.’

Uttlesford CAB have been given limited funding by South Cambridgeshire District Council to extend this service from Uttlesford into neighbouring South Cambridgeshire Wards so we are delighted to now offer this coverage to Ickleton, Duxford or Sawston.

The team often works with clients who have been referred by health professionals or the social services, but if you, or someone you know, might benefit from this service please call 01799 618840. Our general team can cover questions on benefit-related issues but will pass you onto the Home Visit team if their help is needed.
